Axolotl Care Guide

Axolotl Water Parameters Cheat Sheet

Axolotls need specific water conditions to thrive. Ammonia 0 ppm, nitrite 0 ppm, nitrate under 20 ppm, pH 7.4–8.0, temperature 60–68°F. Here's what to test, when to test it, and what to do when numbers are off.

1

API Master Test Kit

Test Weekly$25–$35

The essential water testing kit for axolotl keepers. Tests ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and pH — the four parameters that matter most. Liquid test kits are significantly more accurate than test strips. Target parameters: Ammonia 0 ppm, Nitrite 0 ppm, Nitrate below 20 ppm, pH between 7.4 and 8.0. Test weekly for established tanks, daily when cycling or after any health issue.

Seachem Prime (Ammonia Detoxifier)

Ammonia Emergency$10–$20

When ammonia spikes — during cycling, after overfeeding, or in an uncycled tank — Seachem Prime temporarily detoxifies it for 24–48 hours, giving beneficial bacteria time to catch up. It doesn't remove ammonia, but it buys you time before doing a water change. Keep this on hand and use it at every water change to neutralize chlorine and chloramine from tap water.

Seachem Neutral Regulator (pH Stabilizer)

pH Stability$8–$15

If your tap water pH is unstable or falls outside the 7.4–8.0 range your axolotl needs, Seachem Neutral Regulator can help stabilize it. Rapid pH swings are more dangerous than slightly off pH — consistency matters more than chasing a perfect number. Test before and after water changes to understand your tap water's baseline.

Digital Aquarium Thermometer

Monitor Daily$8–$15

Temperature is a water parameter too — and for axolotls, it's one of the most critical. Target 60–68°F (16–20°C). At 72°F+ you'll see stress behaviors. At 75°F+ it's dangerous. A digital probe gives you accurate readings. Check it daily, especially in summer. If your room runs warm, you may need a small fan blowing across the water surface or a dedicated aquarium chiller.

Aquarium Water Change Siphon

Weekly Water Change$10–$20

Regular partial water changes (20–30% weekly) are the most effective way to keep nitrates under 20 ppm. A gravel vacuum siphon lets you remove water and debris simultaneously. Even in bare-bottom tanks, a siphon is the cleanest way to do water changes. Get one with a squeeze bulb starter so you don't have to suck to start the siphon.
