Axolotl Care Guide
What Do Axolotls Eat? Feeding Guide
Axolotls are carnivores that eat protein-rich food. This guide covers what to feed, how often, and what to avoid — including the best live, frozen, and pellet options.
Frozen Bloodworms
Bloodworms are one of the most consistently accepted foods across the axolotl community. Buy them frozen (not freeze-dried — the texture is wrong and axolotls often refuse it). Thaw a cube in a small cup of tank water before feeding. Bloodworms alone aren't nutritionally complete, so use them as part of a varied diet alongside pellets and other protein sources. Feed 2–3 times a week as a supplement.

One of the few pellet foods formulated specifically for axolotls. High protein, sinks immediately (axolotls don't surface-feed), and most axolotls accept it readily after a brief adjustment period. This should form the foundation of your axolotl's diet — offer 3–5 pellets per feeding, 3 times a week for adults. Juveniles need daily feeding. Remove uneaten pellets within an hour to keep water quality up.

Good protein and most axolotls love it. Brine shrimp isn't as nutritionally dense as bloodworms, so think of it as a treat or supplemental food rather than a staple. Buy frozen (same rule as bloodworms — not freeze-dried). Thaw in a cup and use a turkey baster or syringe to deliver it near your axolotl without losing it in the substrate.

Long stainless steel tweezers for hand-feeding worms and offering food precisely. Lets you place food directly in front of your axolotl without putting your hand in the tank (which can stress them and introduce contaminants). Also useful for removing uneaten food. Essential tool for owners who want to build a feeding routine their axolotl responds to.

The most beloved axolotl owner tool. Use it to deliver frozen food directly to your axolotl's mouth, suck up uneaten food before it rots and spikes ammonia, and do targeted spot cleaning in corners. Every axolotl keeper ends up with one. Get a dedicated one for the tank — don't use one from your kitchen.
