Axolotl Care Guide

Complete Axolotl Tank Setup Guide

A step-by-step guide to setting up an axolotl tank the right way — cycling, temperature, filtration, and hides. What every new owner needs to know before bringing their axolotl home.

1

20 Gallon Long Tank (minimum)

Start Here$60–$120

A 20 gallon long is the minimum for one adult axolotl — and 'long' matters more than 'tall.' Axolotls live at the bottom of the tank, not the water column, so floor space is what you're actually buying. A 40 gallon breeder is ideal if you have the space. Avoid tall, narrow tanks — they're built for fish that swim up, not axolotls that walk around on the substrate.

Aquarium Sponge Filter

Low-Flow Essential$10–$20

Axolotls are sensitive to flow. Strong currents — the kind that come standard with most canister filters and HOB filters — stress them out and can damage their gills over time. Sponge filters move water gently, provide surface area for beneficial bacteria, and are very easy to clean. They're powered by a simple air pump and are the most recommended filtration choice in the axolotl community. Run two if you can — redundancy matters.

Adjustable Aquarium Air Pump

$10–$18

Powers your sponge filter. Get one with an adjustable output or use a gang valve to control flow — you want to move water without creating a current your axolotl has to fight. A single air pump can run two sponge filters, which is good practice. Look for models rated for your tank size with adjustable output.

Digital Aquarium Thermometer

Monitor Daily$8–$15

Temperature is everything for axolotls. The ideal range is 60–68°F (16–20°C). Above 72°F they start showing heat stress — lethargy, loss of appetite, floating. Above 75°F it becomes life-threatening. A digital probe thermometer gives you accurate real-time readings. Check it daily. In summer, you may need a small fan blowing across the water surface or a chiller to keep temperatures down.

Seachem Prime Water Conditioner

Every Water Change$10–$20

Tap water contains chlorine and chloramine that will harm your axolotl. Seachem Prime neutralizes both instantly and also temporarily detoxifies ammonia — which is especially useful during the cycling process when ammonia spikes are expected. Add it to every water change. It's highly concentrated (a few drops treats a lot of water), so a small bottle lasts a long time.
